The weeks leading up to a new school year fill up fast. There are supply lists to check off, school physicals to schedule, and a dozen other details competing for your attention. Amid all of it, a dental checkup is one of the items that often gets pushed to “after school starts” — and then stays there. The problem is that untreated oral health issues can directly affect how well a child focuses, eats, and attends class.

At HulaGrins Pediatric Dentistry in Torrance, we work with families throughout the South Bay to make sure kids start the year with a healthy mouth. Dr. Sena Hiradate and Dr. Sonya Lin see patients as young as six months through their first semester of college. We also see newborns when natal teeth or tongue tie issues are affecting latch. Our focus throughout is on preventive care that keeps bigger problems from developing in the first place. This checklist walks you through exactly what to prioritize before the first school bell rings.

Schedule the Checkup Now, Not Later

A children’s dental cleaning and exam should be on every family’s pre-school-year task list. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends visits every six months, and summer is a natural window to get it done before schedules tighten. A routine exam lets us catch early signs of decay, monitor erupting teeth, and make sure your child is on track for their age.

The CDC notes that poor oral health can negatively affect children’s quality of life, school performance, and success later in life. That connection between dental health and academic readiness is exactly why this appointment belongs on the back-to-school checklist alongside the vision screening and the sports physical.

Ask About Dental Sealants

Sealants are one of the most effective preventive tools available for school-age children. Thin protective coatings are applied to the chewing surfaces of the back molars, where food and bacteria tend to collect in grooves that are difficult to brush clean. The CDC reports that children aged 6 to 11 without sealants have nearly three times more first molar cavities than children who have them.

Our children’s dental sealants are quick to apply, painless, and can protect teeth for several years. We typically recommend them as soon as the first permanent molars come in, around age 6, and again when the second molars come in around age 12. If your child has not had sealants placed yet, the back-to-school checkup is a good time to discuss whether they are a good fit.

Review the Fluoride Picture

Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel and helps prevent cavities, but it is a topic that generates a lot of questions from California families. We address those questions directly. Pediatric fluoride treatments can be applied at the office during the checkup, and we tailor our recommendations to each patient’s individual cavity risk, diet, and home care habits. Not every child needs the same approach, and we will help you understand what makes sense for your family.

Check in on Home Habits

A twice-yearly office visit only works if good habits are happening at home between appointments. The back-to-school transition is a good moment to reset routines. Here is what we recommend reviewing with your child before school starts:

  • Brush twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste for at least two minutes each time
  • Floss once daily, ideally before bed
  • Limit sticky and sugary snacks, particularly during after-school hours
  • Replace the toothbrush if it has been more than three months since the last one

Building these habits early creates a foundation that carries forward through the teenage years and beyond.

Plan Ahead for New Patients

If your family is new to the area or switching providers, getting established before school starts means your child already has a dental home when a concern comes up mid-year. Our new patient process is straightforward, and we take time on the first visit to make sure your child is comfortable with the environment and the team. That groundwork matters, especially for children who feel any anxiety about dental visits.
